Photos of a generous church in action

Photographs by Jay Basinger, event photographer for the April 2 Pennsylvania Relief Sale (and my son), show Anabaptists from across south central Pennsylvania doing some of their favorite things — serving, giving, eating, and enjoying time together. And all for a great cause, Mennonite Central Committee.

In Growing Givers’ Hearts, Thom Jeavons and I wrote about MCC:

The Mennonite Central Committee is widely recognized as one of the best Christian international development agencies, both in terms of the work it does and in terms of the witness it makes and the opportunities it creates for Christians to grow through service. It has maintained its remarkable focus, quality of service, and spiritual vitality, as least in part because it has maintained such strong, intimate relationship with the denominations it represents. Moreover, the members of those denominations (and others) have remained steadfast and eager in their support of MCC because of its quality and focus.

MCC knows it has to pay attention to the spiritual and practical guidance of the “living church” because it does not have the option of living off the “dead hand of the past” (endowments). The members of the living church know they have to support it – and do so generously – because it serves and represents them well.

Congratulations to the 4th and 5th grade Sunday school class from the Grantham (PA) Brethren in Christ Church (my home congregation) for topping the Penny Power leader board with a whopping $2,624.01. The total in spare change contributed at this year’s sale came in at just over $50,000, which has since been matched penny for penny by a corporate donor.

And oh, yes, I did my part as well by purchasing two simply gorgeous quilts. Being generous never looked so good.
