I appreciate Brown’s optimism in suggesting that we should be thinking of making positive impressions all the time. However, due to health concerns I must sleep at least 8 hours per day This would take away 480 of Brown’s opportunities. I can easily count up at least another two hours each day when I am not directly interacting with anyone, which takes away another 120 opportunities.
On the flip side of the coin, there are many, many times during a day when I am interacting with many people, which means that I have many, many opportunities to make both positive and negative impressions. Since there are more than 200 subscribers to this blog. If all of them were to read this comment, I just had the opportunity to make more than 20 impressions per minute that it took me to write it.
What we say and do in private conversations and meetings may make long lasting impressions, what we say and do in public settings make more immediate impressions that we may never have the opportunity to validate or repair. Mr. Brown is making an impression on many people when he is “on the air. or on the lecture circuit.”
